Help made a terrible judgement transaction!gave money for some land first and it's not in my name still in?

theirs,there was a small piece of land for sale last year they wanted cash i gave the money first and they said i must pay for the lawyers fees to sign it over now,i don't want to lose all the money i gave but problem is it will be a couple of thousand to sign it over including the tax on it and i just can't afford it i don't have the money as i recently lost my job,please help so devastated what can i do to protect myself the lawyers wont sign it over without the money please any advice thanks
